The Third Santa Catarina International Shakuhachi Encounter (EISSC-III) will be held
from September 23rd to 26th, 2026 in the city of Florianópolis, organized by
the Department of Music and the Postgraduate Program in Music (PPGMUS) of
the State University of Santa Catarina (UDESC), coordinated by
Prof. Dr. Luigi Antonio Irlandini. The event offers the Florianópolis community
various activities centered on the shakuhachi, the Japanese bamboo flute of
Zen Buddhist tradition, as in the two previous editions of EISSC,
held in 2019 and 2023. However, this third edition of EISSC expands
to include three other traditional Japanese wind instruments that form
the basis of the ancient Gagaku ensemble of Japanese imperial court music since
the Heian period (794-1185): these are the ryūteki (transverse flute),
the hichiriki (double reed wind instrument), and the shō (mouth organ).
This will likely be the first time these instruments and musical repertoire
will be heard live in Brazil, but certainly in Florianópolis.
The EISSC-III will host an academic symposium open to participants worldwide
dedicated to researching any style of traditional and modern music for shakuhachi
and/or gagaku instruments. Symposium participants will be able to share their research
and ideas in papers that will be published in the EISSC-III Proceedings. In addition to
the symposium, the event will offer a shakuhachi workshop for beginner and
intermediate students led by luthier and shakuhachi teacher Henrique Elias Sulzbacher,
and two workshops for intermediate and advanced students led by international guest,
shakuhachi master Akihito Obama. The Encounter is complemented by three lectures,
given by guests Akihito Obama, Danton Oestreich, and members of the Gagaku Trio,
Fabio Rambelli, Thomas Piercy and Lish Lindsey, and by three evening concerts:
a concert with the guests and the organizer of the EISSC, Luigi Antonio Irlandini,
a concert by the Gagaku Trio, and a concert by the Obama-Oestreich Duo, on guitar
and shakuhachi, playing a repertoire of contemporary works composed
specifically for this formation.
